Even more nice, the points price was different for one of the nights and the system automatically selected the cert for the more expensive night. The stay posted no issues.

I called in this week to redeem my cert that's expiring soon for a single night reservation at a different hotel. Since I had an agent on the phone and they seemed competent, I asked them about a reservation with a cert to meet a 2 night reservation out of curiosity.
The agent confirmed it was possible as long as the second night was paid with points, and explicitly said paying with cash was not possible.
My travel plans had already changed since I didn't think it would be possible, so I didn't try to confirm the 2 night cert + points reservation.
I'll report back with an additional DP in case I make that reservation in the future.
