On the side note, I saw some award flights connected in JFK with only 40 minutes connection time, that I think is undoable Why would AA offer such an impossible schedule?
Whether a connection is "doable" and whether a connection is "too risky" are two separate questions. When connecting from a domestic flight (or a pre-cleared flight), 40 minutes at JFK and 87 minutes at LAX are both doable. Whether either is too risky depends on one's risk tolerance and the re-accommodation options in the event of a mis-connection.
