Yeah, if it's a business trip then you're travelling on your employer's behalf, so you have every right to insist on J for medical reasons (even if against policy) or you just flat out refuse to go. But that's between you and your employer, BA have no stake in the game, so they don't have any obligation to give you anything more than you paid for.
But if it's discretionary personal travel (which this sounds like), then it's up to you, either pay for business, put up with economy/PE, or don't go. Breaking it up is an option as mentioned, but if that also sounds like it's too much then your options are limited.
