I have had bad experience of TS too, but I put that down to different treatment on Euroflyer routes as to and from LHR it (subjectively) works better.
These days I just reserve two aisle seats for Mrs Tafflyer and myself. The middle seats are quite randomly taken or not. Aircraft seem so full these days that there are only slim chances of any seats remaining free.
