Some have night versions these are LAX/JFK KE012/086 to KE621. These do compete with the following PR flights 103/127. In Korean PR is written as this 필리핀항공.
Speaking of MU PVG to MNL/CEB tends to be a late night one MU211/5023. I had a family friend do MU JFK-PVG-MNL/CEB they disliked it due to the crew lacking English skills and noisy cabin. One positive of MU is that they have a cheap fare. That's why they went KE623/615 from KE082 JFK-ICN-MNL/CEB
I'm kind of surprised to hear that your friend scored a cheap fare on MU, especially from JFK because that is their most expensive route. Pre-covid, they frequently dumped capacity to places like MNL, BKK, and SIN in order to fill up seats on their prime long haul flights. They've resumed that pricing strategy for Europe-SE Asia markets, but not for the US or Canada (supply is tight, so there isn't much incentive to discount). The $1600-1800 (one way) fares in the image below are 3x the price of KE, OZ, CI, BR, CX, UA, and JL. And, double PR's nonstop.
