I would fly CI/ transit through TPE on any day. I've done it in the past to overnight in TPE both ways on the way to BKK or MNL.
I also don't mind overnighting in Japan either way. Visiting Taiwan or Japan is always a delight to me. Maybe even Korea. Shanghai does not interest me.
When I checked in for my KE flight (DL flight number), the agent told me I was entitled to 3 checked bags, and clarified that even some of their own KE business passengers are not entitled to that. I was not given the runaround like on other connections on other SkyTeam carriers. KE agents are very well-informed about the policies of their JV partner.

Thanks for the answer and why not go KE all the way from US origin such as Pacific Time Zone SEA SFO/LAX/LAS KE042/006/018/024 to KE623 Eastern Time Zone US BOS/JFK/ATL/IAD KE082/094/092/036 to KE623/625 MNL CEB KE615. Some have night versions these are LAX/JFK KE012/086 to KE621. These do compete with the following PR flights 103/127. In Korean PR is written as this 필리핀항공.
Speaking of MU PVG to MNL/CEB tends to be a late night one MU211/5023. I had a family friend do MU JFK-PVG-MNL/CEB they disliked it due to the crew lacking English skills and noisy cabin. One positive of MU is that they have a cheap fare. That's why they went KE623/615 from KE082 JFK-ICN-MNL/CEB
