Personally I think it's quite crass to ask someone to give up a seat without some gesture in return. I've never done it but, in the event I need to do it, I'd get a bottle of wine beforehand from duty-free, and offer as a gesture of thanks. And if they decline then, well, we have an extra bottle to drink during our holidays!
