If UA Can't place you to NH they do it as this UA to BR via TPE for MNL or UA direct to MNL from origin.
Back to the question have you tried DL to MU via PVG or TPE on CI.
MU is something I've never flown and might be interesting, but I won't fly them anytime soon.

I would fly CI/ transit through TPE on any day. I've done it in the past to overnight in TPE both ways on the way to BKK or MNL.

I also don't mind overnighting in Japan either way. Visiting Taiwan or Japan is always a delight to me. Maybe even Korea. Shanghai does not interest me.

When I checked in for my KE flight (DL flight number), the agent told me I was entitled to 3 checked bags, and clarified that even some of their own KE business passengers are not entitled to that. I was not given the runaround like on other connections on other SkyTeam carriers. KE agents are very well-informed about the policies of their JV partner.
