You will most likely be offered cash upgrades in the app either way if there are rooms available to upgrade into for both cash and award nights. Recently had that with a stay, although I didn't pay to upgrade because for me it wasn't necessary on that stay but the offers were there for both cash and award bookings.
So if it makes more financial sense to book the weekday night with cash and the weekends with certs then I would do that and then check the app to see what offers they give you for upgrades.
