Just go to your booking, select any other seat anywhere on the plane for the extra traveller, then move yourself into that now-vacant seat, then move the extra traveller into your former seat. Save and done. If you are using a car seat for the toddler, they must be at the window (not sure about VA specifically but that is the rule on most airlines) so don't change that.
Thanks Finkface, yes I did try this approach via the manage bookings page. Unfortunately when I attempt to change the seats, it shows the original seating as suddenly unavailable and will only let me select something completely separate, ultimately splitting us up.
