I don't condone Stanley Johnson's behaviour but there were at least two other passengers on the steps with him who wanted to get off, and when the Captain eventually cancelled the flight he said in his announcement that half the passengers on the plane wanted to get off at Heathrow.
Just to say thank you for that much more balanced and insightful account. My own take on this is that once an airport like LGW has a blocked but sole runway, then stuff tends to happen, and it's not really anyone to blame. Worse things happen at sea.
