I am not saying there is isn't phantom space as I may have run in to it in one instance but most folks I know have been able to book the flights they want. As noted you may need to HUCA. One of the blogs posted that chat is often more successful than calling in. The same blog booked 8 J seats on one flight which is probably approaching unicorn status (my personal best in the past has been five).
