AA customer service told me yesterday that if I ticket US-DOH, and want to add DOH-MLE, I would need to cancel and start from scratch. When I asked about just holding US-DOH until the connection booking window opened up, she said it was the same- she would need to release the hold, and then search for the full US-MLE itinerary. And if the released US-DOH doesn’t immediately go back into inventory, I am out of luck.
This has been my experience as well. Any changes, either AA only or involving partner awards, they simply say just cancel and rebook it. I had this happen when a BA segment opened up that would’ve cut the trip time by 10 hours. I didn’t want to release the first segment because I was worried someone else would grab it and I’d screw up the whole trip. Think I made the right call.
