I've had success with an identical situation in the past, I approached the member of staff manning the barrier by myself as to not be presumptuous and asked the question, offering my understanding that it wasn't the policy and I was kindly allowed to bring little one and better half through.

Of course, entirely subjective on the day and I think attitude and manners make a big difference in these situations.
