The one thing you have to do regardless is to get new boarding passes before going back to the USA from the gate agents. The ones they give in the first leg are just for Brazilian airlines and United system won't be able to read them. A lot of people don't know that, so often there's a line of frustrated travelers talking to the agent while boarding is happening.
Yes, I normally go to the gate a bit earlier to get the UA boarding pass. Probably could use the UA app to board, but I guess I am old school and like the paper boarding pass. One thing nice about getting a boarding pass for the UA flight from the domestic carrier is that it allows you to use the airside connection between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Doesn't work for Azul, since one has to shuttle bus from Terminal 1. During Covid, the domestic carriers were not providing the UA boarding pass.
