Another big caveat of course is that restaurants in London do almost all add 12.5% (occasionally more) in service charge. That's a whole other thread and nowt to do with tax. But it does make restaurants different to the otherwise general rule that the price you see is the price you pay!
Every service charge I've seen at a restaurant in the UK or Europe was a separately listed item. Until I got into the habit of checking my bill more closely when overseas I often over-tipped.
