I usually don't buy points, but with a 100% bonus that is getting tempting. My big fear is that IHG will devalue the points by simply raising the number of points I need to get a room. It's not like that has not happened in the past.

I just purchased 500k points, this offer previously was capped at 300k points. I thought the bump up to 500k was too good to pass up if you have the IHG credit card to go along with the purchase and are booking 4 night stays.
Getting the 4th night free makes this a good deal. I saved 1k on a 4 night stay using points versus paying cash. The $2500 outlay should return $4000 to $4500 in value if your staying at Kimpton or InterContinental level properties.
I would have atleast a 4 night stay in mind though to make sure your points purchase is being used right away. The longer you sit on points the more they get devalued.
