Also my experience. I've never paid VAT or sales taxes etc. but some cities have nominal per-night taxes to be paid directly, and those are the only additional cash charges I've been asked to pay on reward night bookings. These have been in the range of 3-5USD/EUR tops.

I have had this and have not had to pay the tax. On odd occasions there has been a city tax (BCN comes to mind) that was payable, but it was not very much.
