Lots of ways to get to MAD via DFW, PHL, LHR, etc. But I definitely wouldn't wait until I get to CLT or bank on there being seats available on the CLT-LHR flights specifically. All 3 of AA's CLT-LHR flights tonight are J0 as of 8:45am EST, as an example.
To my mind, the biggest risk in the OP's scenario is that the first flight departs and lands on time, BUT is held on the tarmac at CLT for 10-20 mins waiting for a gate to open up - thus no time for advance planning. For that reason if I were the OP I would continue to try for an itinerary change with Iberia. While some people may be fine with such a short connection for reaons they have explained above, in my view no one should be forced to accept such a short connection (and the additional risk/stress) when they originally booked something that gave them ample cushion for delays. OP I'm sorry IB is being so uncooperative ...
