​​​​​​If the OP gets delayed and is proactive and gets rebooked in the morning directly from SAN then I agree that there will be options somewhere. Lots of ways to get to MAD via DFW, PHL, LHR, etc. But I definitely wouldn't wait until I get to CLT or bank on there being seats available on the CLT-LHR flights specifically. All 3 of AA's CLT-LHR flights tonight are J0 as of 8:45am EST, as an example.
