They likely would have let him board(Though they might have came looking for him to find out why the CP hasnt boarded, since she was a checked in passanger, it might also hold the flight up), but his wife would have been determined to be Skiplagging, and they can ban you from flying southwest if its determined you do that to often. Its not worth the risk, so you book two separate reservations, and only have the wife as a CP on the first one.
