If your goal is to end up with an eCredit, there is no rush to cancel unless the flight date is rapidly approaching (and this is easily avoided if you can find a flight in the right cost range that is months away, or next year etc)

If you book something far enough out, you can wait a week or more before cancelling if you need to use it as an eCredit (e.g. to apply to a Companion cert booking), or if you are using it for a solo trip you can skip the cancellation step entirely and just use Modify Flights to change to the one you actually want once you know what that is.
