Since you're willing to endure 8 hours (including a 2 hour connection) in economy class just to get to KUL, would it kill you to go to TYO, also with a single connection, in Y instead? You'd save $1000+ and wouldn't lose a wink of sleep contemplating these needlessly complicated logistics that actually do entail a non-trivial element of risk (as you acknowledge)? KISS
