Method 2 yields extra payment to the hotel, not from the guest but from WoH. Why should the hotel give away the benefit for free rather than insist on you taking the quite simple step that gives them some extra revenue in exchange for the benefit?
If booking an award stay for yourself yields less cash to the hotel than booking a GoH award, thus creating an incentive for the hotel to require you to book the GoH for that second group then I was unaware and rescind my position, as that would indeed make a hotel want you to book it that way even though it practically changes nothing for the guest. My belief was that an award stay for you or an award stay as GoH yielded the same payment to the hotel.
