Rental car companies tracking tires with RFID tags?
Why don’t car rental companies use RFID tags in tires or other parts stolen during rentals?
I spoke with a loss manager at AVIS who told me the vast majority of parts theft such as tires, wheels, etc., must be caught immediately upon return of the rental to be able to determine who the renter was when the theft occurred. They have no quick & easy way to check the inventory of their vehicles prior to renting a vehicle and insuring the parts inventory of the vehicle is the same upon return. I was told thieves even swap engines where the vehicle still runs ok so the staff don’t notice the theft until after several rentals later making it impossible to determine which rental the theft occurred. I’m told by AVIS this is a big problem.
