... and regardless of how that is handled, the IRROPS (is it an IRROPS if everything is on time - or even early as I once had a SFO-Hawaii close its doors 10 minutes early and I missed the connection while running from another gate) is still a pain....
if I change the tix to a longer connection (next option is a 3 hour stay in SFO) - I wonder if UA will waive any additional ticket prices since they allowed the ticket in the first place?

You can certainly see what options are there if you try to change flights. A 3 hour connection in SFO doesn’t seem too bad to me.
