Air France paid full value for a brand new RIMOWA on a first trip GRU-CDG-DBV, so it does happen.
RIMOWA did issue a document attesting to it being brand new to support the claim and unable to repair owing to the hole (actually more a gash) AF managed to put in it during handling.
Delivery was also delayed 1-2 days, so one leading theory was that someone attempted to open it by force.
