I’m not sure avoiding British Airways will solve the problem. No idea who handles their baggage at Austin, but maybe you’ll need to avoid Austin altogether. Or at least find out who their agent is and avoid any other airlines that use that same agent. Of course there’s always the risk that your bag gets damaged by a different airline or handling company anyway.
