People would start booking the last or first flight of the day, or the cheapest and then use the same day change to move to the flight they want. I think limiting it to elites (whatever that status means at airlines like SAS where EBG and EBD is easy to achieve) makes a lot of sense and also is THE ONLY benefit as Diamond I can see and really appreciate over Gold.
You can only change to an earlier flight if there are seats, that is just not a deterministic tactic and I doubt anyone or very few folks would attempt that if they had to be somewhere at a fixed time. I'm happy for this to be a general perk like the US stand-by system and then select folks based on tier, revenue, miles flown or w/e criteria so Diamonds would always get priority over anyone else.
In return we could then have a real Diamond perk like SAS giftcards or something material I don't already get from the fare I buy.
