Eh, I think checking all of the bigger bags (OP said they were checking one) is by far the easiest way to remove the stress point of having to be at the gate ready to board right when your group is called. If they don't get free checked bags (I suspect they don't) then they can just voluntarily gate check the rest of the rollaboards for free.
