You don't connect the account but rather insert your Flying Blue number into the reservation. You do this at the same step as you enter the passenger's name - there's a field to enter the frequent flyer number. You can also do it later via manage my booking or at check-in. If the points don't post for some reason, you can do a retroactive claim with Flying Blue and they will credit them manually. Note that posting points from partners may take some time.

In principle you earn XP when flying on SkyTeam partners so filtering out SkyTeam airlines is a good way to find flights that should most likely earn XP. Note that some booking classes may not be eligible, which is something you need to very manually.
There are some non-SkyTeam partners that earn XP but these are generally rather obscure ones and there's no easy way to filter out their flights. Note that Transavia also earns XP on some fares, which may come handy if you have an European trip coming.
