They could reduce the problem by at least 20% just by instructing people with iPhones to buy the ticket directly from their Apple Wallet. But judging how poorly the Wallet rollout itself has been advertised, it's probably expecting too much.
last time I was in Paris, I spent about half an hour trying to buy a ticket on my phone, neither the company iPhone nor personal Sony phone worked. I gave up and walked to the RER station to buy in a machine and had to walk back to T2F because that was where the replacement buses were leaving from. (There were people selling tickets there, but they only had the one way 11,80 ones. I needed a multi-day ticket)
