I remember the podcast from the tower controller doing arrivals at the time of the BA38 incident saying that the actions and muscle memory just kicked in without thought as they went through the emergency drill as they had trained.
Slight topic drift but the ATC audio from that event is an absolutely masterful example of calm professionalism under stress, similar to the BA Captain’s ATC during the LAS fire.
I’d hazard that actually airport fire crews do a fair bit of work other than training just with dealing with all the myriad of incidents that occur around such a large airport as Heathrow - from chemical spills to road traffic collisions etc. I arrived at a stand last week and there were fire crews, ambulances and police swarming the plane adjacent but nothing was ever reported so I imagine there are lots of events we don’t even hear about.
