I am flying ewr-sfo and put myself on the waitlist for milage upgrade. Im am plat and figured why sweat it out. I was suprised that although 100% empty first class both ways, no seats were immediately available.

Am I silly to burn the miles?

Also am I correct in thinking that I will get 100% elite since I booked on line plus the normal miles and bonuses. Upgrading with miles does not effect earning right?
