what happens if I didn’t make the international flight? It is down to AA to get me to London on another flight or my issue as I selected a flight with a short connection time?

If both flights are on the same PNR, it would be the responsibility of the late-delivering carrier to protect you. If the AA flight is on time and you dawdle, that could be a different story.
