I'm sure they can do something. It's getting an agent who understands they can do something, even if they have to talk with someone higher up to get approval. I'd see if they could do something like return the miles and give her an ETV for the amount of $ the ticket cost. In this way they aren't refunding the money just holding it for her next ticket.
