A family member who is a minor had the pineapple coconut chicken. This person only took a few bites of the food and said it wasn't to their liking. Thankfully that was all, because within an hour or so this person was having a fully-blown allergic reaction.
This person is allergic to peanuts and most tree nuts, but is definitely not allergic to coconut. I did enter the peanut allergy into the passenger information, although I found it odd that Delta allows you to specify a peanut allergy but has no way to specify a tree nut allergy. Unless we're totally blind, there was no mention of any peanuts or tree nuts in the dish description, and the in-flight crew were not able to provide us with a full ingredient list either, despite pulling up detailed menu and nutritional information on their in-flight handhelds. Our only thought here is that there's an undisclosed tree nut ingredient, or there was some major cross-contamination somewhere.
This was a very frightening experience at 30k feet with 3 hours to go before landing. I will say the crew handled it very well. Thankfully one of the passengers on the flight was a medical person and with that person's advice and medication we had on hand we were able to mange the situation. We didn't have to divert and my family member is fine.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Delta about this.
Really, really, really glad to hear the person is okay.
I have started traveling with benadryl for this very reason. I don't have any known allergies but just in case someone around me does, I have it. Also keep a bottle at home for the same reason. I hope Delta is able to provide you with some answers!
