Shenzhen has special rules considering it borders HK. So for example, it is possible to get a short stay visa at the border between HK/Shenzen - a friend did it just a few weeks ago.
That said, the difficulty with SZX was always that lack of int'l connectivity on a single ticket, a requirement for the Transit visa - it seems the OP has a way around this though.
