I often wonder how the fire crews at airports stay focussed shift after shift knowing that training excepted, the chances of a serious incident requiring their help will probably not happen today. I remember the podcast from the tower controller doing arrivals at the time of the BA38 incident saying that the actions and muscle memory just kicked in without thought as they went through the emergency drill as they had trained.
For our safety, they train and train and train for emergencies. I suspect many of them never use that training in a real world scenario throughout their careers. Yet it is reassuring to know that when it matters, they perform in an exemplary fashion.
