Why not get an eVisitor visa? Are you a citizen of a country where thats a problem or something? I think my eVisitor visas have taken less than an hour to be delivered in the last few years.

I have no opinion about the way they handle a transit visa though but my experience about immigration in Australia is better to be safe than sorry.
