I'm guessing the ~7 PM last flight to NYC is too tight of a connection even if booked separately?
Because there are no DFW-NYC flights at ~8 PM; but you are welcome to buy a separate ticket on the 7PM DFW-NYC flight. AA is assuming 1 hour isn't sufficient to connect international - domestic at DFW.
