The background story of the EU antitrust regulators back-n-forth negotiations with Lufthansa include the trans-Atlantic pact of Lufthansa with United and Air Canada.
Obviously it will take time for ITA to leave SlyTeam and join Star. So I imagine ITA will not help my Aeroplan activities as a Star member in the near term. But I hope Air Canada will bring something better news soon.
Well... the Air France-KLM deal with SAS could be an indication of "How long it may take for one airline to leave an alliance and join another". The actual announcement for SAS to leave *A to join SkyTeam was rather quick, but is taking a few months for the actual transition to happen
