So far I have never had any problem finding JAL redemptions both intra Japan and out. And I will soon be doing my 5th trip to Japan this year.
Most of my redemptions are fairly last minute (a few days before the flight), the recent one back to UK in J (via FRA) I booked just 3-4 days prior, which cost me a mere 90,000 Avios + crica £100 . And there were seats available in J for pretty much any day I looked at.
So I don't really do these 355 days out game as I see no point as I often fly to Japan sort of on the spur of the moment and can stay up to 90 days per trip (last trip was two months).
If you want a direct then that could be more difficult at last minute.
