Competitive landscape. For the domestic market JAL and ANA have used the free wi-fi as a marketing factor for quite a while. Where as long haul has not seen many airlines give it away for free until much more recently.
I do hope that JAL does like Singapore Airlines' free WiFi, where you have to have your Krisflyer number registered on the booking to get free WiFi.
