If you have silver or higher, you can select E+ from at lest 24hrs prior. It's pretty much free with a credit card too.

If you don't select a seat and wait til E- is full, they have to give you an E+ seat. But it might be a middle or you might be separated from your companion.
Even if E is completely full, upgrades usually pull from E+
