Getting the lower option can take some jiggling with dates a stopover duration. And it's Sod's law you'll not get the schedule options you'd prefer. Try outward and return trips: they can give very different results.

And then sometimes it just doesn't work at all 😂
I did try, but there always seemed to be a premium which was odd.
Qatar also charge as mucb to fly MAD-DOH as they do MAD-DOH-BKK, which doesn't make much sense.

In the end, I gave up and booked Lufthansa from Munich direct to BKK in business for 800E less return each. That's 1600E. I've always wanted to fly an A380, and for 800E I can stomach the slighly worse wine, food and seat.......
