I think one issue may be that the TIE card (even the new one) does not have the physical cryptographic chip (the new TIE card does have one, but not physical, it can only be read using the RDIF antenna). If I remember correctly, the e-gates that are currently installed works by reading the physical chip, so they can't read the TIE cards. Also the e-gates in Spain use both photo and fingerprint checks (or they used to, there is a long time I do not cross the Schengen Border in Spain), and I am not sure the TIE cards store fingerprints in the crypto chip (the DNI does).
