i checked expert flyer a day or two ago but it was just showing as “scheduled” and has only recently turned to cancelled on EF and FR24. Sadly EF just seems to show CANX without a reason code.

Given that your friend is a fellow Balearics flyer from LGW I am almost certain the issue was a lack of EuroFlyer flight crew at Gatwick and hence applicable for 261, but others will most certainly confirm.
