It seems they didn't try to substitute anything, but that the services being requested were no longer available.

The reason for that could be incompetence, nefarious in nature, or totally legitimate as the space was taken by someone else in the time it took the OP to transfer their points and try to go back to make the booking.

I'm sure there are probably other options to get the OP to their desired destination, but perhaps at a higher cost...just like when Best Buy has a 'door crasher' on Black Friday on 65" TV's...once the $599 ones are sold out, there are lots of other options at $799/899/999...but of course you wanted the $599 option which is no longer available. Space is never guaranteed nor infinite, rather very limited for obvious reasons.
