I recently (last week) canceled a 1 way trip that I had booked for my parents before departure and received Trip Credits for each.
I suspect AA is moving towards this model for all flights, as it makes little sense to have duplicative structures for most cases. In the past, Customer Relations has converted flight credits to trip credits for me as well.
